What is in the E-Cigarette?
The e-cigarette itself is an electronic device consisting of a cartridge found at the mouth tip, an atomizer, and battery with light up indicator. It is a fairly new product on the market and was created as an alternative smoking device to mimic all the actions of smoking without the use of tobacco. The device itself is fairly mechanically simple, but the big question many have is just what is in it for the smoker? Just what is in that cartridge?
The Electronic Cigarette Looks Real
The replaceable cartridge is the chamber carrying ingredients meant to replicate the taste and smoke that come from smoking tobacco. It contains only 3 or 4 simple ingredients. Nicotine, water, flavor (or essence) and propylene glycol. Nicotine is completely optional and not necessary for the mechanics of the device to work. This makes it possible for even a non smoker to experience what a smoker does without worrying about becoming addicted to nicotine.
As most people know, nicotine is found in tobacco. Despite the attempts by some to concern us with the fact that nicotine is used as a pesticide, what many do not realize is that nicotine has not been found to be a cancer causing agent. In fact, nicotine is found naturally in many of the vegetables we consume, including but not limited to tomato, potato, cauliflower, eggplant, green pepper, and even some teas. Currently nicotine is being explored for its possible therapeutic properties. Like anything else, too much of it is obviously not a good thing. Cartridges for e-cigarettes are available in different strengths to help monitor that.
Propylene glycol (PG) is the element which gives the e-cigarette its smoke like effect. It is a legal substance found in many medicines, cosmetics, toothpaste, food, and mouthwash. It is used in smoke machines in nightclubs, where it is inhaled regularly by employees and patrons visiting the establishments. While there have been no long term studies on the effects of the direct inhalation of propylene glycol in a vapor state, it is currently deemed as a safe substance by the US Food and Drug Administration’s list of ingredients which are Generally Recognized As Safe or GRAS. It is also recognized as safe for use by the WHO (World Health Organization). Propylene glycol is often confused with ethylene glycol. While both are used in things like antifreeze, ethylene glycol can be poisonous. Some e-smokers may be sensitive to or have an allergic reaction to propylene glycol. If you currently notice specific lotions and products which irritate your skin or cause break outs, check the labels on those products first for the presence of PG. If you decide to try an e-cigarette, you will have to monitor carefully your smoking experience.
A small bit of water or H2O is necessary to help create the steam or “smoke.” The atomizer helps to vaporize the water, and gives the real feel of smoking a cigarette. During the vaporization process, the liquid is gently warmed. Just like the fire from a regular cigarette causes a slightly warm feeling on the back of the throat, the warm mist from an electronic cigarette gives that same feeling when the e-smoker inhales. In the vapor like state, the nicotine can be delivered immediately to the lungs – much the same way it is with traditional smoking. It makes it a very familiar way for the user to ingest nicotine in a way they are very familiar with.
Flavor is the last ingredient and is rapidly developing in it’s available options. Most tobacco has some kind of cherry or strawberry sweetness to it. Most e-cigarette manufacturers begin their basic flavors using this knowledge. Mint is added for those looking for a menthol experience. Other more organic flavors like banana and vanilla offer a completely new experience for the smoker that was not available though current tobacco store shelf brands. When consumed, the flavors are never turned into real smoke, and retain their pleasant smell.
Simplicity of the E-Cigarette
Thousands of unknown variables associated with smoking tobacco have been reduced to just four simple ingredients with the introduction of the e-cig. It makes this device very desirable to consider. Knowing exactly what is in it can bring a huge sense of relief to those who are in the direct presence of the e-smoker. And who knows, perhaps even non-smokers may find a new pleasure in smelling the mild aroma given off from an e-cigarette.
